As of today, the Parker River Wildlife Refuge has open more of the parking lots and night fishing permits are now available.
At noon, lots 3 – 7 are now open to the public so they can enjoy the trails, the beach, and the scenery. So that means lots 1, 3, 6, & 7 are open and these are the ones that have beach access. And Sandy Point (which was never closed) also has beach access for fishing.
Night Fishing Permits: The PRWR is now allowing walk on night fishing. The drive-on IS NOT OPEN YET. This night pass is for parking at one of the lots and walking onto the beach to fish. (Drive on is expected to open at the beginning of September). So go get your night fishing permits! JUST REMEMBER: You still have to be on the refuge before the gate closes for the night, which has been about 30 minutes after sunset, but don’t quote me on that . You can get out of the refuge anytime during the night through the exit gate because it has an electronic eye that will open the exit gate.
You can obtain a night fishing permit from the HQ office on the Plum Island Turnpike Monday – Friday 8:00-4:30. And also at the gatehouse from anyone working. Someone is generally there daily 7:00 am – 7:00 pm. But…… do not rely on showing up at the last minute to get a permit. In the past, these times haven’t been accurate so give yourself extra time and come earlier. And with the hours of daylight shrinking, the staffing at the gate will probably also shrink.
So with all this said, it’s time to fish the PRWR! The southern end of the island is finally open! Get out there and get fishing!
